Australian Pig Farming: The Inside Story

Walpig3-182

  Wally's Piggery - August 2012

Wallys empty-10

Wally's Piggery - June 2013

Animal Liberation ACT & NSW announced on 12 June, 2012 that Wally's Piggery in Murrumbateman and Tennesse Piggery in Young are no longer in operation and the RSPCA confirmed its closure in the Canberra Times on Saturday 15 June. A big thank you to everyone who called, emailed, signed the petition, or raised awareness about pig farming in Australia by sharing our photos and videos following our investigation in August last year (view pics from the rally we held in August 2012).

A later investigation shows that Wally’s Piggery was never just a “rogue operator”. Animal Liberation ACT recently obtained footage from Ean Pollard’s Lansdowne Piggery in Young NSW, where hundreds and hundreds of pregnant pigs scream and thrash, trying in vain to escape their tiny metal cages (known as sow stalls) while showing signs of insanity and starvation. The single eight-minute continuous shot isn’t “graphic”, but it’s still very difficult to sit through. Right now, hundreds of thousands of pigs across Australia are suffering in cages just like these.

In December, 2014 Animal Liberation ACT was appalled by the withdrawal of the case against Wally and Stephanie Perenc, the operators of Wally's Piggery.  The deplorable conditions in this piggery just outside Canberra were brought to light in August 2012. General community outrage was expressed across the nation.  Almost a year to the day after Animal Liberation ACT & NSW's investigation into this travesty of a 'farm' was released, the RSPCA NSW laid 53 charges against the operators, including 12 counts of alleged aggravated animal cruelty.  The full horror of the conditions in which the poor animals lived and died in the piggery can be seen on Australian Pig Farming: The Inside Story.

Now, more than 2 years after the initial investigation, RSPCA NSW has revealed that it has dropped ALL charges against the piggery operators.  No compelling reason for dropping the charges has been provided by the animal welfare organisation.  Indeed, for most of its brief statement about the dismissal of the case it blamed the very activists who brought the case to light.  Without these activists, there is little doubt the operators of Wally's Piggery would be still be farming pigs today. Now, thanks to the dismissal of the case, they can do so again.

This is a catastrophic failure of the legal system to protect the most vulnerable and exploited beings in our society: farmed animals. Animal Liberation ACT held a rally to ask: RSPCA - WHERE IS THE JUSTICE?

Please visit Australian Pig Farming: The Inside Story to view the footage and images form our latest investigations and share them with your family, friends and colleagues. The easiest way to end their suffering is by boycotting the industry encourage people to eat a plant-based diet.  Click on www.veganeasy.org for some great cruelty-free recipes!

The cruelty and suffering discovered at the piggery is indicative of the entire pig industry.

Circuses Are No Fun For Animals

Each year around April/May the Queanbeyan Council leases the Queanbeyan Showground to circuses that use animals in their shows. Animal Liberation ACT is currently campaigning to have Queanbeyan Council ban circuses with animals. For information on why circuses with animals are unethical click here.

Big Birds, Big Cruelty

Animal Liberation ACT has been running an awareness raising campaign called ‘Big Birds, Big Cruelty’ about the treatment of turkeys in Australia for over 3 years.

The Big Birds, Big Cruelty campaign aims to expose the treatment of turkeys in Australia. Three to five million turkeys are currently killed every year in Australia for meat – and this number is steadily growing.

Stop the ACT Kangaroo Kills

Thousands of kangaroos are killed every year in the ACT in government sanctioned 'culls'. Animal Liberation ACT has been campaigning against the kangaroo kill for a number of years now, including the slaughter of over 1,000 healthy animals in May-June 2012. Having large populations of kangaroos killed in the same nature parks repeatedly is of grave ethical and ecological concern for the future conservation of kangaroos in these reserves.
