Canberra Rally: RSPCA - Where is the justice?

ALACT outraged at dropping of charges against Wally's Piggery operators

On Monday 17 November 2014 all animal cruelty charges against the operators of Wally's Piggery were dropped by RSPCA NSW

Animal Liberation ACT is appalled by the withdrawal of the case against Wally and Stephanie Perenc, the operators of Wally's Piggery.  The deplorable conditions in this piggery just outside Canberra were brought to light in August 2012. General community outrage was expressed across the nation.  Almost a year to the day after Animal Liberation's investigation into this travesty of a 'farm' was released, the RSPCA NSW laid 53 charges against the operators, including 12 counts of alleged aggravated animal cruelty.  The full horror of the conditions in which the poor animals lived and died in the piggery can be seen on Australian Pig Farming: The Inside Story.

Now, more than 2 years after the initial investigation, RSPCA NSW has revealed that it has dropped ALL charges against the piggery operators.  No compelling reason for dropping the charges has been provided by the animal welfare organisation.  Indeed, for most of its brief statement about the dismissal of the case it blamed the very activists who brought the case to light.  Without these activists, there is little doubt the operators of Wally's Piggery would be still be farming pigs today. Now, thanks to the dismissal of the case, they can do so again.

This is a catastrophic failure of the legal system to protect the most vulnerable and exploited beings in our society: farmed animals.Wallys pig-396

2014 Living Green Festival

Animal Liberation ACT at
the 2014 Living Green Festival!

Animal Liberation ACT had a stall at Canberra's only vegan festival and it was such a great day!

The festival has such a huge array of cruelty free food, drinks and stalls including vegan ice creams and fudges, pies and a cruelty-free BBQ (thanks Veganarchy!!)

There was even a dog cafe so people could bring their canine family members along for a low-carbon treat or two!

Who'd have thought Canberra could stage such a fantastic celebration of all things cruelty-free?!

Huge thank you to the organisers of the event and we can't wait to be a part of the 2015 festival!

If you'd like to see wht it was all about or find out how ou can be involved next year then check out the Living Green Festival website or Facebook page.

Living Green Festival 2013

ALACT stall LGF 2013 P1120332Animal Liberation ACT was once again proud to be at Canberra's annual vegan festival - the Living Green Festival - in 2013.  There were more than 75 market and community stalls, including an amazing range of multicultural vegan food - from Malaysian, Indian and Salvadorean cuisines, to a great Aussie sausage (and schnitzel) sizzle!  The Festival showed once again that Canberra's vegan community is alive and well!

Demo for the 407

407 demo IMG 3040 copy 2Animal Liberation ACT held a demonstration on 6 June 2013 on the day the 2013 kill was announced by the ACT Government.  The demonstration focussed on the 'invisible' suffering of the joeys killed in the annual kangaroo kills.  Official kill numbers do not include the numbers of joeys killed when their mothers are shot.  Last year, the ACT Government announced that 1,154 kangaroos were killed. Documents obtained by FOI, however, revealed that in addition to those animals, a further 407 joeys were also killed.
